11th June 2024
The great British summer is still waiti.ng in the wings as much of the country endured conditions more akin to the end of April rather than the beginning of June in the last week. The weather forecasters are still indicating continued unsettled weather despite the Daily Mail claiming that a record breaking heatwave is just around the corner.
Despite the weather, we have reached the last 16 of the National Schools Boys Under 18 T20 with most regions having their regional finals this week. In the North West, Sedbergh face 2022 runners up Myerscough College and the winners will face St. Peter’s, York in the Quarter final. In the West Midlands, two time winners Shrewsbury are away at Malvern (also a two-time winner), while in the East Gresham’s await the winners of Norwich and Repton. The winners of these two finals then face each other.
Millfield have won the South West Tier 1 competition and will face the winners of Clayesmore and Sherborne in the Tier 2 competition in order to represent that region. The victors of that tie will face either Canford or St. Edward’s, Oxford in the South Central final. The winner of the London final between Whitgift and Merchant Taylors’, Northwood will face Cranleigh, who beat Eastbourne in the South East final last Thursday. The semi-finals will pit the North winner against the Midlands winner, while the champions of South and South West will play off against the London and South East winner.
The Girls Under 18 100 ball competition, whose final will take place alongside the boys’ final at Lord’s on the 28th June, has reached a similar stage. In the North, Sedbergh have still to face Barnard Castle in the round of 16 with the winners meeting Shrewsbury in the quarter-finals. The other quarter finals involve 2023 winners Repton facing 20123 Under 17 champions Ipswich, Berkhamsted play Millfield (2023 runners-up) and Barton Peveril College, the last state school in the competition taking on Bradfield College.
Despite the unseasonable weather, a number of high scores and centuries were recorded at the weekend. Cranleigh racked up an impressive 372-9 off 50 overs against RGS Guildford. Their prolific batter Adam Thomas scoring 158 (he also scored 76* against Eastbourne in the regional final). He now has is now has 771 runs and is in sight of the school batting record with 6 more games scheduled. Trent College amassed 350-2 against Repton with Adi Badge making 156* and Byron Hatton-Lowe scoring 110.
St. Edwards, Oxford followed up their South Central T20 semi-final win on Friday by beating the same opposition on Saturday after scoring 358-6. Their Sussex Academy all-rounder Dylan Driscoll Teddies recorded his 3rd century of the season taking his tally to 723 runs. In Reed’s’ drawn home game against Hurstpierpoint, Ben Willsden made 112 for the visitors while A. Jenkins made 100 for Reed’s. Hurstpierpoint also exceeded the 300-mark before declaring.
Sherborne nearly overhauled Canford’s 269-7 for whom George Guirdham made 119, while Sherborne’s Year 9 pace bowler JP Tatham took 5-37. Sherborne finished 7 runs short with Tatham’s older brother, Will, dismissed two runs short of his maiden century.
