With two days of cricket largely washed out in the last week and the ongoing public exams, there is a paucity of results this week. However, with the end of the exam season fast approaching and the promise of better weather on the horizon, many schools will face a busy last few weeks of term.
All games scheduled for last Thursday appear to have been cancelled due to the weather, while the deluge on Saturday put an end to school cricket over large swathes of the country. Only schools in the far South East and East Anglia managed truncated games.
The National Boys Under 18 T20 is now down to its last dozen or so schools, with four through to the national quarter finals and the remaining eight due to play their regional finals (national round of 16) this week.
Epsom progressed in the London play-off final at the expense of Haileybury to set up a quarter-final tie against either Simon Langton GS, the last remaining state school this year, and Cranleigh, who reached last year’s quarter-final. Alex Chambers top scored with 85* for the Surrey side. In the South Central region, Wellington overcame local rivals, Bradfield while Winchester, led by a magnificent 96 from England Under 19’s Seb Morgan, squeezed a spirited Marlborough side to set up the regional final. In the South West, Taunton having beaten Truro and Penwith College last week, were themselves defeated by Clifton in the semi-final, while Millfield brushed past 2023 national champions King’s Taunton in their semi-final.
In the Midlands group, the East Midlands and East Anglia title was won by Trent College, who comfortably beat Stamford in the regional final, while in the West Midlands, Shrewsbury and Rugby set up an intriguing final with good semi-final wins. Shrewsbury had a straightforward win at Bromsgrove, while Rugby came away from 2019 and 2021 champions Malvern with a surprise win.
The North final will be contested between current champions St. Peter’s and Bolton, who reach this stage for the first time since 2013, when they had the Parkinson twins and Haseeb Hameen in their ranks.
The wet weather and public exams have also impacted the progress of the 100-ball competition as it reaches its quarter-final stage. Rugby easily defeated their county rivals, Solihull, to progress to the last eight. Amelie Bishop with 60, followed by just 3 runs from the 15 deliveries she bowled with 13 dot balls, earned her the player of the match.
The quarter-finals have thrown up some intriguing ties as King’s Worcester have a long trip to Leeds to face the Yorkshire Cricket College, one of two remaining state colleges in the competition. Current holders Ipswich travel to Wellington College, while last year’s beaten finalists Bradfield host Barton Peveril College, the other remaining state college. The remaining quarter-final pits Rugby against the winner of Millfield and Clifton.
With only one tie beating the weather in the last week, the Boys Under 17 cup has also reached the quarter-final stage with three-time former winners Shrewsbury facing a long trip to Scarborough, while another former winner, Bede’s , faces the winner of Hampton, KCS or Kingston Grammar. Rugby has a home tie against Bedford, while Haileybury travel to Millfield in the final tie of the round.
