So we come to the end of yet another school cricket season, It seems ridiculous that we finish this early when my club still have another ten league games in the Liverpool Competition. It has been a funny season where little cricket was played in the first three weeks due to cold and wet weather, an increasingly warm middle section until the third week of June and a damp end where thunderstorms and some torrential downpours washed out games in some parts.
We have two cups still to settle, the Girls Under Hundred that was washed out and the Boys Under 17 that is always played in the Autumn term. The latter will be played at Loughborough between holders Shrewsbury and Winchester.
Last week’s games were mainly played in Festivals, where schools get the opportunity to play overseas schools and others not on their regular circuits. These included the Silk Trophy at Eton, the RGS festival in Colchester and the BOWS festival at Brighton that featured a girls festival for the first time. Other schools like Tonbridge host 3 overseas schools in the shape of a South African, Australian and New Zealand school.
With most cricket playing schools now on holiday, my mind has turned to next year’s Wisden. Invitations for reports and statistics were sent out to schools nearly two weeks ago and around 50 schools have replied so far, though this is only around 25% of the number who appear in the publication. The closing date for submissions is 11th August, after which it will be difficult to include too many more schools.
Every spring, my predecessor Douglas Henderson and I, receive emails from disgruntled Old Boys and parents of cricketers because their school has not appeared in the new edition of Wisden. The explanation invariably is because no entry had been received.
To ensure that your school features, please encourage you master i/c to complete the paperwork sent to them.
If you want to be included and haven’t been sent the paperwork, please email [email protected]
To be eligible, schools must be playing at open age group level and play at least 6 games in the season. Batters must score a minimum of 150 runs and bowlers take 10 wickets to be included. For female cricketers, the figures are 100 runs and 7 wickets. We encourage state sector schools to send us their reports and statistics.
Please enjoy your summer and we will return on April 16th next year.
