16th May
Four weeks into the term with effectively a third of the season completed has seen the number of school games wind down as schools go into exam mode. While Year 11 and 13 (Fifth and Upper 6th formers to the uninitiated) disappear on exam leave for the next 6 weeks. Perhaps the only positive that has come out of the exam system in recent years was the scrapping of the old AS exams. This has enabled the National Under 17 competition to develop in recent years, under the stewardship of Andy Barnard, former master i/c at Shrewsbury.
Some excellent cricket has been played so far this season as the competition has reached the second round. One of the highlights in the last week was the record-breaking total posted by Solihull in their Midlands regional match against Trent College. In their 35 overs, Solihull scored 371-4, with Isaac Maddy, son of former Leicestershire, Warwickshire and England cricketer scoring 109 from just 50 balls with 10 sixes and eight 4’s. Opening partner James Hawkins scored 92 off 70 balls with 8 sixes and captain Josh Reynolds hitting 82 off 46 balls with 6 sixes. Trent were never able to match the asking rate as they made 231-7, still a decent score in 35 overs.
The National Under 18 Boys T20 is also reaching the final stages of the regional rounds with Berkhamsted and Merchant Taylors’, Northwood through to the North London Final. Though many regionals have been affected by the wet early season weather, some regions such as South Central are playing catch up. There are many key games being played this week and hopefully there will be a more comprehensive report next week.
Next week’s report is unlikely to be published until Thursday 25th May, due to personal circumstances.
