With many games called off at the weekend over a wide swathe of the country due to heavy overnight rain on Saturday, this disappointing season continues. However, the weather presenters are forecasting better things for later this week and the week after when the finals of both the boy’s and girl’s competitions takes place at Lord’s (28th June).
In the National Boy’s T20, last week saw some exciting as the competition reaches its climax. In the East region, Repton played their delayed regional semi-final beating Norwich, who have enjoyed a good season with runs in both Under 18 and 17 competitions. In the regional final, Repton then beat Gresham’s to set up a home tie against Shrewsbury in the Area play off. Shrewsbury beat both the weather and Malvern to book themselves a place in the Midlands play off for the first time since 2017. With heavy rain forecast for the afternoon last Thursday, Shrewsbury set off at 7am to travel to Malvern and play at 10am in an effort to get the game on.
In the North, Myerscough recorded a fine win over Sedbergh at Ashton on Mersey CC to win the North West title. However, in the North play off, they were heavily beaten by St. Peter’s, York, who are also enjoying a fine run in the Under 17 cup.
In the South region, St. Edward’s beat Canford to set up an area play off against Millfield, who won the South West region by beating the Tier 2 competition winners, Clayesmore.
In the London region, Merchant Taylors’, Northwood beat 2022 National Champions Whitgift, to take the London title. This set up a tie with a highly fancied Cranleigh side, at Sandy Lodge. Merchant Taylors’ recovered from a shaky start to post a competitive total, then bowled well to restrict their visitors.
St. Edward’s host Millfield today (Tuesday) with the winners facing Merchant Taylors’ in the semi-finals, while Shrewsbury travel to Repton on Wednesday in the remaining quarter finals. The winners of this tie will face St. Peter’s, York.
The final will take place at Lord’s on Friday 28th June at 2.30pm, with The Cricket Paper National Schools Under 18 Girls 100-ball final taking place in the morning (11am). There will be free entrance and spectators should contact me [email protected] – for complimentary tickets. There will be free entrance into the Pavilion, subject to spectators meeting the dress code. This will be jacket and tie for men and semi-formal for ladies, but no jeans or trainers. There is no dress code for Under 16s.
The Girl’s 100 ball has reached a similar stage with two quarter finals to be completed early this week, before the two semi-finals being completed by the weekend. Shrewsbury, who beat Sedbergh last week, will face the winners of Repton and Ipswich, the current National U17 champions. Bradfield will face the winners of Millfield and Berkhamsted.
In The Cricket Paper Boy’s Under 17 cup, three semi-finalists have been decided and with just one quarter final to be determined, the competition is on course for its September final. It is a testament to the numerous masters i/c cricket around the country who have beaten the weather, an increasingly fiddly timetable of external exams and unsympathetic senior leaders to have made such excellent progress with the three competitions that the School Cricket Committee is associated with.
Finally, this week, we would like to promote Sherborne’s excellent initiative in having a charity cricket week in their last week of term.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural Ruth Strauss Foundation Cricket Week, Sherborne will again be turning Red for Ruth this summer, in the final week of June.
Starting on Saturday 22nd June and running through until Thursday 27th June, an expanded event will see 30 matches against 14 different opponents, with players from Sherborne Prep all the way up to the 1st XI, and the staff team, taking part.
There is an ambitious fundraising target and money will be raised through the sale of souvenir brochures and original prints of The Upper. Additionally, all the pupils will have the chance to contribute through a non-uniform day, and there is also going to be a prize draw (running both on the ground during the week and online throughout June), including some fabulous items such as tickets and hospitality at Hampshire CCC, kit, and one of Zac Crawley’s England shirts. Finally, the four 1st XI matches – against Blundell’s, Sherborne Pilgrims, St. Andrew’s Grahamstown, and MCC – will all be sponsored by local businesses who will dedicate funds to the pot for every run scored, boundary hit, or wicket taken.
Master i/c Cricket, Hugh Tatham, comments, “I am delighted that we are again supporting the Ruth Strauss Foundation, which does such incredible work to help bereaved families and to advance research into non-smoking cancers. The money we raise will make a huge difference to the Foundation, especially in training healthcare professionals to support families facing the awful challenge of the death of a parent. Our teams are excited about ending the season with this super event, so I hope we can have a wonderful week of thrilling cricket in glorious sunshine. Our target is to raise £5000 for this magnificent cause so do come and join us as we go Red for Ruth and end the 2024 Cricket season in style.”
