Many apologies for the late posting of the column last week. I spent the week on the Algarve and took my iPad with me to be able to update the website with last weekend’s scores. Alas there was a technical difficulty with the website and the internet that meant I was unable to update it until I arrived home at the weekend. I’ll blame Brexit like I do for the rest of the ills of the world!
As we enter the last few weeks of the school year, schools are playing longer format cricket with many overseas touring sides now here in preparation for end of term festivals, while declaration cricket has returned as the MCC have played many schools over the course of the last week along with a few two-day games scheduled for this week and next.
The National Schools Boys Under 18 T20 is reaching its climax with most regions at the semi-final or final stage this week, with early regional play offs due to be played early next week before Finals Day at Arundel on 2nd July. 198 schools entered this year making it a record entry and with the wet weather at the start of term, it has been problematical at times. Congratulations and my sincere thanks go to all the regional organisers in driving the competition forward in some difficult times.
In the North, Manchester Grammar defeated last year’s national runners up Myerscough College in the NW Final and will face Worksop, who beat the highly fancied St Peter’s, York in the Yorkshire and NE final. The two will meet at Maghull CC in Liverpool on Thursday.
The Midlands group is at the semi-final stage with last year’s semi-finalists and two times winner Malvern facing another two times winner in Shrewsbury. Bromsgrove and King’s Worcester play in the other semi-final. While in the East, Stowe face Bedford and The Perse will play Gresham’s.
The South West Tier 1 competition was dominated once again by King’s Taunton, who will play the winners of Winchester and Bradfield for a place at Arundel. The South West Tier 2 final is being contested by Clayesmore and Exeter.
In London and the South East, Merchant Taylors’ Northwood will represent North London against reigning champions, Whitgift, who squeaked past Epsom in last week’s South London final. The South East final will take place at Tonbridge, between the home side and the last remaining state school in the competition, Canterbury Academy, who have accounted for a few notable scalps along the way this season. The London winners will play against the South East winners to make up the four schools who will make up finals day.
The Cricket Paper National Under 17 has reached its quarter final stage with the draw confirmed as:
Shrewsbury v St Peter’s York |
Repton v Bedford/Stamford
Merchant Taylors’ v Clifton/ Winchester |
Forest v Bede’s |
