With exams well underway now, midweek cricket for 1st XIs has taken a back seat, with the Boys Under 17s competition gaining momentum. Holders Shrewsbury eased past Wirral GS at New Brighton CC on Friday with Wirral native Louis Hursthouse making an unbeaten 118. Abingdon racked up an incredible 339-5 against Berkhamsted, who posted 250 in return, E Barksfield top scoring with 114* for Abingdon.
In the National Boys Under 18 T20, all remaining regional quarter finals have to be played this week, otherwise the tournament director’s lucky 50p piece will be forced into action. With finals day in Yorkshire and the North East scheduled for Friday in York, St. Peter’s and Newcastle School for boys have qualified while Scarborough face QEGS, Wakefield on Tuesday for the right to face Yorkshire Cricket College on Wednesday. The winners then make up the third place to contest a three-way final. In the North West, the semi-finals pitch Rossall and Sedbergh against each other, while Lancaster RGS and Myerscough face each other. Both ties take place on Friday. The winners of the North West and Yorkshire and NE groups play against each other to determine the North winners before playing the winners of the West Midlands and East groups in the national semifinal.
In the East, the East Anglian duo of Norwich and Ipswich have reached the semi-finals, with the former due to meet the winners of Bedford and Gresham’s, while the latter faces te winner of Repton and Stowe. In the West Midlands semi-finals, Malvern and Solihull face each other in the semi-final, with Shrewsbury facing the winners of Wrekin and Rugby. The East and West Midlands winers will then play each other in the national quarter final for the right to play the North winners in the national semi-final.
In the South West, Millfield need to beat Taunton to win the Tier 1 competition, should they fail then King’s Taunton could win on NRR and face the winners of the Tier 2 competition for the right to face the winners of the South Central region. South Gloucester and Stroud College face Clayesmore in one semi-final, while Sherborne face the winners of King’s Bruton and Wellington (Somerset).
The South Central region is more complicated with quarter finals between Wellington and Dauntsey’s, Magdalen College School and Canford still to be played with the winners facing each other. St. Edward’s have already qualified for the semi-final and will face the winners of Winchester and Reading Blue Coat. The winners of the South Central region will then face the winners of the South West to progress to the national semi-final.
In London and the South East region, the South East area already has two finalists where Cranleigh will host Eastbourne, while In North London Merchant Taylors’ will host Berkhamsted in a repeat of last year’s sectional final. In the South London section, Whitgift beat Dulwich at the weekend to reach the final and will face either Epsom or KCS, Wimbledon who were thwarted by the rain last week. The winners of both London sections will face each other for the right to play the South East winner to win the London and the South East title with winners facing the South Central/South West winners in the national semi-final.
The girl’s competitions are making good progress with Shrewsbury and holders Repton already through to the quarter finals of the 100-ball. Shrewsbury had a scare against Solihull on Saturday before a storm curtailed play with Shrewsbury well ahead on Duckworth Lewis.
As next week is half term and there will be few games to report on, there will be no blog. The next weekly blog will two weeks today on Tuesday 4th June.
