In a summer that has been blighted so much by wet weather, the sun finally shone last weekend as the finalists for the inaugural National Schools finals day at Lord’s this coming Friday were decided.
In the Boys Under 18 Competition, Millfield, faced with 2 games in the week, travelled to Oxford on Wednesday where they overcame St Edward’s by 89 runs to reach the semi-final. While on Thursday, Repton hosted Shrewsbury to determine the Midlands representatives. In a low-scoring affair, Shrewsbury inflicted their second victory of the season over their hosts by defending 108.
In the semi-finals, Merchant Taylors’ Northwood representing London and the South East faced South and South West winners Millfield at Sandy Lodge, while Midlands winners Shrewsbury travelled to Northern winners St. Peter’s, York. Merchant Taylors’ set four-time winners Millfield a challenging 152 for victory, that they managed with the loss of 4 wickets with just 2 balls to spare. Without England U19 star Theo Wylie, Shrewsbury were well beaten by their hosts, who reached the latter stages of the competition for the first time.
In the Girl’s U18 100-ball, last year’s winners Repton, crashed out to the 2023 Under 17 champions Ipswich in their quarter-final, while last year’s runners up Millfield negotiated their way past Berkhamsted. In the semi-finals, Shrewsbury travelled to Ipswich on Saturday and came up short against a buoyant home side, who have also reached the finals day of the School Sport T20, while Millfield were narrowly beaten by Bradfield.
There is much anticipation ahead of this year’s finals day to be held at Lord’s, by kind permission of the MCC. Although the Boy’s T20 finals day was held on the Nursery in the late 2000’s, it has since 2011, been staged at the glorious surroundings of Arundel Castle. This is also the first time for both competitions that only the final has been staged on Finals Day.
The Girl’s Final will start at 11.00 and the Boys match scheduled to start at 2.30pm. Presentations will take place at the end of each match. Both games will be live streamed with the link for this being announced on the Schools Cricket Twitter feed @schools_cricket
Anyone wanting to attend, should contact the Ticket Office at Lord’s for tickets, although entry on the day is possible, either at the Grace or North Gates.
There will be a new name on the Cricket Paper Boys Under 17 trophy as Solihull and Epsom booked their places in September’s final. The date and venue for the final are yet to be finalised, but hopefully will before this column closes down after the culmination of the school’s season.
Amongst other results, a few seasons best performances were recorded over the weekend as Brentwood posted a massive 432-8 in 45 overs in their Essex Independent Schools League game against Royal Hospital School. Blundell’s Seb Linnitt scored 210, the highest reported score so far this season, against Sherborne, while Hampton’s Naavya Sharma picking up 8-23 from just 7.3 overs against RGS Guildford.
For many schools, this week marks the final week of the term and also the end of the season. For some schools, there are end of term festivals, while others are off on tours, it also marks the time when I send out requests for Wisden reports and averages. The paperwork has been sent out (Monday) and I have asked that this is returned by the 16th August at the latest. If any schools wish to appear in next year’s Almanac and have not had an email, please contact me on [email protected]
