Once again, a rather abbreviated set of scores this week due to the A level and GCSE exams being in full swing and of course, the start of half term.
Some games took place on Saturday with most schools involved in games against their Old Boy’s XIs. For the uninitiated, many schools hold their speech day/prize-giving on the first Saturday of half term when marquee hire companies make a killing. Part of these celebrations involve the 1st XI playing a team of Old Boys and possibly the Cricketer Cup side in preparation for their first match in the competition.
Having spent the last half term teaching at Charterhouse, covering for illness in the Geography Department, I watched some of the game on Saturday and quickly realised that the Old Carthusians XI wasn’t the strongest opposition for the 1st XI. With many recent alumni still playing regular club cricket and the fact that league cricket is now largely played on Saturdays, fielding a side to give the 1st XI a good game is still a challenge for many Old Boy’s clubs.
Some schools like Shrewsbury realised this when their head moved Speech day from a Friday to a Saturday about 15 years ago and moved their Old Boy’s fixture to a Friday.
The National Schools T20 is now reaching the final phase in the group stage and there will be a report in next week’s column.
