The climax of the school’s cricket season took place this week as the MCC kindly hosted the National Schools Finals day on the main ground at Lord’s.
Barton Peveril became the first state institution to take their place in the final of the girl’s competition and had reached the final after beating both of last year’s finalists in their five games on the road to Lord’s. Their opponents, Rugby, had a far more straightforward route to the final, though this did include 2023 finalists Millfield amongst their scalps.
In temperatures that were forecast to hit the mid-30s C, Barton Peveril raised a few eyebrows when their captain invited Rugby to bat. Rugby started slowly but confidently and lost their first wicket on 45 when this season’s leading scorer in the competition, Amelie Bishop was given out LBW off the bowling of Spanish international Naiomi Hillman Bermejo, who was the pick of the bowlers with 2-20 from her four sets.
Amu Surenkumar was the mainstay of the innings with an assured 51* scored from 41 balls. Rugby finished with a respectable 129-4, which many on the ground felt to be slightly below par given the conditions.
Barton Peveril started confidently before losing captain Mia Clark on 29 and Tabitha Stanley on 54 after just 9 sets. At 77-2, with a third of the innings remaining, the Hampshire side looked well poised, but the loss of five wickets in 11 deliveries saw their innings turn around as Amu Surenkumar took only the second hat-trick taken by a woman in Lord’s history. Surenkumar was duly awarded the player of the match award for her half century and a 4 wicket haul as Rugby took the girls’ title of 100-ball champions for the first time.

The Boys Under 18 final was a much more one-sided affair, as both Rugby and Clifton had reached the final for the first time. Clifton won the toss and, with the mercury pushing 33°C, elected to bat but were soon in trouble at 12-2 after 10 balls.
Opener Zain Syed and Lewis Popple steadied the ship as Clifton reached the end of the first Powerplay with 50 on the board, before a flurry of quick wickets saw the Bristol reach the 12th over eight down and with just 76 on the board. A 54-run partnership between Rhys Baker (34*) and Jonty Taylor (16) for the 9th wicket added respectability to the innings as Clifton closed on 130-9. Slow left-armer Jack Pidgeon was the pick of the bowlers with 4-16.
Rugby set about their target with relish, posting 57 without loss in the powerplay. The wickets of Sam Mills (23) on 67 and Levi Gekis (17) when the score was 98 did little to restrict the powerful Rugby batting line-up. When captain Jordan Strydom (24*) hoisted Gammell into the Grandstand at the start of the 16th over, Rugby made it a third National s title for the season. Scotland Under 19 batter Rory Grant was awarded the player of the match for his fine unbeaten 65 (45 balls, 4 fours and 5 sixes.)
