With summer still to arrive with vengeance, I was intrigued to read on the BBC website that the Spring of 2024 had been the warmest on record. This is a fact that I find hard to believe given I have had to put my central heating on a couple of times in the last week and the plants in my garden are still somewhat behind where I would expect them to be at this time.
It also came as no surprise that Spring 2024 was also the wettest on record, no doubt helped by some appalling weather in the week leading up to half term. As can be seen from the results below, very little cricket was played apart from cup competitions.
All regions in the National Boys T20 are either at the regional semi-final stage or even have regional winners in two cases. In Yorkshire and the North East, St Peter’s, York overcame the challenge of Scarborough and Newcastle School for Boys in a three-way final play off, while Merchant Taylors’, Northwood swept their way past Berkhamsted to win the North London title once again. All regional finalists will be known early next week, with Wednesday 12th June, the cut-off date for these games to be played. Area play-offs will take place as soon as possible after that with the National semi-finals (North v Midlands and South Central/West v London/South East) in the week ending 21st June.
The Cricket Paper Boys Under 17 competition, now at the last 16 stage, threw up some surprises with Shrewsbury, winners for the last 2 years, being ceremoniously dumped out of the competition by Denstone who won by 10 wickets. Norwich, enjoying a good run in the T20, disposed of Bedford, while Rugby were beaten by Solihull, who are also enjoying a good season having made the regional semi-finals in the T20 for the first time.
The Cricket Paper Girls Under 18 100-ball is also at the last 16 stage, with holders Repton and last year’s finalists Millfield safely through, though the highly fancied Bede’s side, who made it to finals day last year were narrowly beaten by Eastbourne in a low scoring game. The highlight of the quarter finals will be Repton against current girls Under 17 national champions Ipswich due to be played on 15th June.
The results for the T20 will be updated during the week, so keep checking for the latest news.
