Review by Douglas Henderson
Once again, there is an absolutely huge number of results below, and we shall have a SEARCH facility up and running soon if you want just to look at the results for a particular school (or anybody/ anything else). This facility will also cover results from the last five years (courtesy of my coverage for The Times), since they will all be available on this website shortly. The same will apply to all the statistics ? all (eligible) pupils from all schools, not just those who make it to the ?Best? lists – from the last four years of Wisden.
However, one of the joys of this very full schools cricket coverage ? far greater than any printed paper could possibly hope to provide, even weekly – is to follow the results of schools up and down the country and maybe to spot the Test stars of the future. They all have to start somewhere.
There was a fine advertisement for both schools cricket in general and the declaration game format in particular at King Edward VII and Queen Mary School, Lytham. The visitors, Cheadle Hulme, were put in and, strongly guided by Jack Langley?s fine 106 not out, they declared at 164 for eight. The cause for KEQMS seemed hopeless when the last over began and they still needed 19 to win. With six down, they naturally went for the win and the captain, Lewis Williams, no doubt buoyed by the adrenalin rush of having just completed his maiden century, personally scored 18 off the final over, with six first ball, two second ball, two fours, a dot ball on the fifth and a two on the sixth to bring the scores level. Who says draws are boring?
Conditions were difficult at St Albans where the home side was put in by Haileybury. They somewhat ground their way to 146 all out in 49 overs. Haileybury found it no easier, losing one of their openers fourth ball, while only one other broke 30 against excellent fielding and steady bowling. Though they finished 61 short, it was a very tight game throughout.
A welcome addition to the new pattern of local Twenty/20 competitions has been the Western Schools version, set up by John Bobby of Clifton. Happily, there are many good cricketing schools in this fairly confined area (helped by excellent motorway connections). Four teams each from Taunton, Bath, Bristol and Gloucestershire produce a round-robin winner from each group (not necessarily on the same day), and thereafter it becomes a knockout. Some group matches appear in the results tables below, as do results for the well-established National Schools Twenty/20.
Harrow, top of Wisden?s outstanding seasons list last year, came unstuck twice in the week and Taunton, fourth, nearly did. Both schools have been very difficult to beat in recent seasons. In a very tense game Harrow scored 192 for 9 in their 50 overs, and Charterhouse got there but with nine wickets down. Wellington had a slightly easier task, overcoming Harrow?s 216 for eight (in 50 overs) with five wickets remaining.
Taunton overcame local rivals Blundell?s but only narrowly and with great tension. The home side Blundell?s had put up a relatively modest 165 for three on their excellent ground and Taunton had to work hard to achieve the total with nine down.
Alex Fisken, Westminster?s leg-spinner, has already taken a five-wicket haul this season, but repeated the event in style last week by taking a hat-trick against Alleyn?s in the last three balls of the innings, with six for 11 in total, to bowl out Alleyn?s for 66, following the home side?s 168.
