Review by Douglas Henderson
Dr Challoner?s Grammar School stuttered badly at first, being reduced to 17 for four. However, a vigorous rally (Luc Baldwin 74) allowed them to declare at 142 for six. In reply, Watford Grammar School were well up with the rate at 122 for four with seven overs remining. At this point, the final six wickets fell in four overs with no addition to the score. Tom Crick took four for nought in his last two overs, a feat similar to one last year where he took four wickets in four balls to record an improbable win against Reading.
There was a stunning all-round performance by Ollie Wilkin playing for Merchant Taylors?, Northwood, against Westminster. Coing in at 11 for one, he departed 200 runs later with 121 to his name, leading to a declaration of 243 for nine. He then bowled with genuine pace and took six wickets for eight in his first spell. Returning later, he took the last two wickets, thus finishing with a return of eight for 14 in just over eight overs.
Ross Powell, who plays for Caterham?s Under-12 team, has had an extraordinary run of form recently, with 103 not out against KCS Wimbledon, and 101 not out against Seaford. He has altogether scored 321 in four games.
Haberdashers?Aske?s have achieved six wins in seven games. All-rounder Kushal Patel was the star of their most recent match, against RGS HighWycombe, hitting 85 off 69 balls and then taking five wickets for just 17 runs in six overs. Earlier, Matthew Noyes (son of the RGS Coach) claimed six for 32, bowling his off-breaks, to give his side hope after Haberdashers? had reached 112 for 1 from 20 overs. He restricted them to 227 for nine, but Patel?s bowling reduced the visitors to 76 all out.. .
Bancroft?s have won all eight games played so far. They inserted Eltham on a wet wicket and their four spinners resticted the home side to 119 for nine in 40 overs, a total reached without loss.
Jed Cawkwell scored his second successive century at Framlngham, playing for the Royal Hospital School. He then took five for twelve including a hat-trick. His school remains undefeated, having won six and drawn two.
Oundle’s opener Rory Osmond brought his early season tally to 579 in nine innings, including three centuries and four 50s, with two consecutive undefeated centuries against Wellingborough and Stowe.
