Review by Douglas Henderson
Most independent schools finished last week or even the week before, though state schools are soldiering on. It is also good to see post-term festivals flourishing again as well as in-term cricket weeks. The Sir Garfield Sobers international schools tournament in Barbados, now in its 23rd year, opened this week and this website will hope to be covering results almost daily.
Clifton bounced back from a heavy defeat by Blundell?s to record six consecutive wins in eight days. They defeated Cheltenham in the area final of the Western schools Twenty/20, and rounded off their cricket week with wins against Queen’s Taunton, Marlborough and Malvern. However, they lost to a strong King?s Taunton side in the overall final of the inaugural Western Schools Twenty/20.
Caterham and Hurstpierpoint enjoyed a low-scoring thriller. The hosts, Caterham, having been 45 for no wicket were then bowled out for 108. The visitors were in terrible trouble at 69 for nine before their last pair put on 42 to win the match.
In an excellent game of cricket at Haberdashers? Aske?s between two good sides, it was the home team that emerged victorious to maintain its unbeaten record against schools and inflict a first defeat of the season on Bancroft’s. Number three, Rishabh Shah, scored a fine 86 not out as the visitors reached 226 for three in their allotted 40 overs. In reply, the Haberdashers? captain Lewis Jenkins (64) led the way but after his dismissal there was still much to do, with 72 runs coming from the final 8 overs. It was 16 year old Tom Edrich, grandson of Bill, who struck the winning runs with just two balls to spare to secure a 13th victory of the season for the home side.
It is nowadays extremely rare to take eight wickets, partly because the vast majority of games are, alas, limited-overs with a usual maximum of ten overs per bowler but also because of sensible ECB regulations aimed at preventing over-bowling of medium-pacers. Jake Lintott of Queen?s Taunton was not confined by either of these hurdles in a time game against the school?s Old Boys. He started by scoring 145 in a total of 336 for three declared and then took eight for 51 with his left-arm chinamen and googlies.
