To avoid confusion for Masters in charge providing the information, this website keeps to the style guidelines and other protocols of The Times (its earlier incarnation) and Wisden, even though these two sometimes clash. Nevertheless, I have included the score of 99 not out by Strathallan?s Freddie Coleman who, fresh from a century (104) against the XL Club, needed one to win the match against the Old Boys but seven to reach his century. He hit a six with the scores level. He followed this up with 140 not out to defeat MCC after the former Master i/c at Charterhouse, Peter Deakin, had scored 146 not out for the visitors to declare at 243 for one. Coleman has already represented Scotland and is currently averaging 236 for his school.
The County Town of Somerset once again proved its three independent schools? cricketing strength when Taunton School entertained Queen?s (while King?s on the same day defeated Clifton). The home side started disastrously with six for three after four overs, but Will Gater (121), Jonathan Debenham (23) and George Cook (58) rallied things to reach an impressive 276 for nine after 50 overs. Jacob Lintott led the reply with 61 before Will Stewart powered his way to 118 in only 70 balls, and things were rounded off by George Musgrave (41) and Jack Kohler (27 not out), the latter hitting two consecutive sixes to win the match with eight overs to spare.
Will Vanderspar of Eton is the first schools player reported to have passed the 1000 mark for the season, in only 12 innings. However, it was not enough to overcome Winchester who won by seven wickets on their home ground. Will Root of Worksop is not far behind, with 860 runs in all games, including four centuries, at an average of 107.50.
Sevenoaks had a fine tight game with Eltham. The former scored 140 from 35 overs with Max Thorpe making a well-constructed 51 on a damp bowler-friendly wicket. Sam Hardy stood out with three for 19 in seven overs. Eltham replied steadily but were pegged back by Kit Carter Leno?s leg-breaks (four for 16). As Eltham lost their ninth wicket at 123, chasing 140, matters were getting interesting but, cometh the hour and all that, Sam Hardy struck a six, a two and a four off the penultimate over to see Eltham home with seven balls to spare. Excellent stuff.
Matt Paynter, Monkton Combe?s quick bowler, took a hat-trick in his five for 25 against King Edward?s, Bath, the third time this season he has taken three wickets in an over.
