Ben Lodge of St Peter’s York, who hit six sixes in one over
Yesterday morning (Monday) by about 10am I had had remarkably few results when I would have expected to have a large sackful, given the fine weather. So I sent an email to Masters i/c. Some replied quickly with a result from Saturday, probably having rather got out of the habit after two weekends of half-term etc (it takes just three clicks to do this with electronic scoring). But more troubling was a reply from several that they didn’t play cricket on Saturdays in the middle of the exam season. Well, in a term of about 10 Saturdays, four of them taken out for exeats and in most years a couple rained off, it’s hardly a season at all. One well-known cricketing school has only six all-day fixtures scheduled for 2018.
I doubt whether boys (sic) have changed that much since I taught them for 35 years so the notion that they will spend a Saturday afternoon having a quiet five hours of vigorous revising by the river-bank seems pure moonshine. It’s either wishful thinking, window-dressing, paranoia or complete misunderstanding of the teenage mind. When will schools get a grip on this ludicrous obsession with exams (partly pressed on them by idiotic parents)? Not much good for mental health either, which we hear so much about (and fail to diagnose the very obvious cause). Or healthy eyesight which we read about recently (if it were actually true that they were endlessly revising, of course).
Happily, most sensible schools did play some cricket and there were some striking performances. Literally so in the case of Ben Lodge of St Peter’s York (pictured above) who in a National Schools T20 match hit six sixes in one over in an innings of 75. Not a record, of course, but pretty rare.
Chasing Bedford Modern’s 145 for six in 45 overs, Wellingborough came unstuck early on, but from 17 for three they recovered to win comfortably in the end, losing no further wickets. They were led by year 10 opening batsman James Sales with 68 not out who put on 124 with Nathan Piper (53 not out).
Another fairly dramatic recovery, but ultimately unsuccessful, occurred when Haberdashers’ Aske’s entertained Berkhamsted. The visitors, led by an opening partnership of 176 between Sam Quinn (86) and Scott Rolfe (103), reached a formidable 268 for 4 in 50 overs after winning the toss and making good use of an excellent batting strip. In reply, Haberdashers’ collapsed to 53 for five in the 11th over and later 91 for six. However, a superb partnership of 125 for the seventh wicket between Luca Ignatius (86) and Saavan Shah (60) threatened to turn the match on its head. But it was not quite enough, as the visitors held on to win by 22 runs.
It is rare for bowlers to take a stack of wickets, such are the restrictions on medium-quick bowlers especially. However, as is often the case with good inswing bowlers, batsmen clearly forgot the golden rule of playing such bowling, which is ALWAYS to get right forward, never back (except for a rank long-hop). Eltham’s Ben Day, a right-arm medium-fast bowler, came on first change on Saturday with King’s Canterbury on 40 for two. Bowling prodigious inswing, he had his first victim LBW and then a further four all bowled, plus one stumping. Taking six in a row, he might have had more but for a run-out and a wicket at the other end. His analysis was an impressive six for six as the visitors were skittled out for 63.
