As one understandably frustrated Master i/c put it, back to some cricket at last. For many schools, Saturday was their first match for two weeks or maybe even more. Some didn?t even manage that as rain affected many areas.
It is a truism of the game that many of the most exciting ones are low-scoring. It was certainly true of this cliff-hanger at Bedford Modern School, who entertained Wellingborough. Bedford Modern batted first and some excellent Wellingborough bowling restricted the hosts to just 125 with the final wicket falling in the 40th over. In reply, momentum continually shifted but the loss of three early Wellingborough wickets slowed the run-rate even further. Tight Bedford Modern bowling, combined with some excellent catching, ensured that the game went down to the wire. With two overs to go, Wellingborough were favourites, needing just nine runs with three wickets still intact. However, the tail-enders failed to capitalise and six runs were required from the final over. Two wickets then fell, along with only a couple of singles scored, meaning it was four to win off the last ball or three for a tie. Wellingborough could manage to scamper only two runs, thus losing the (overs) game by one run.
The National Twenty20 competition organisers are glad to see that the forecast for this week looks promising, as several areas are still a little behind, with Finals Day at Arundel approaching fast: Thursday June 29th 10am start (7pm approx. finish). We now have one contestant for the day in Sedbergh, who have reached the grand day out by beating St Peter?s York in the North region final This is Sedbergh?s fifth appearance in Finals Day since the competition started in 2010.
Elsewhere, Tonbridge are waiting to play either Whitgift or Merchant Taylors?, and St Edward?s are waiting to play any of Clifton v Millfield or Colston?s v King?s Taunton. In the West Midlands and Wales, Shrewsbury play in their final against Newcastle under Lyme, and the winners will then play the East, where four schools are still competing: The Leys v Oakham and Bedford v Shenfield. All results of the competition are published below and you can click on a link to see the competition spreadsheet.
A year 9 Ipswich boy, Alisdair Marlow, in an Under-14 T20 cup match for the school last month against Culford hit 162 not out coming in at number three. He had already scored 101 against Bishop’s Stortford College. He has also scored 100 for Suffolk this season. Very impressive.
