There was a cliff-hanger in the National Twenty20 West semi-final at Clifton (coached by Paul Romaines, the former Glos CCC opener) against Filton Academy (coached by Tim Hancock, his successor in that role). Filton scored a fairly modest 133 for five, a score due almost entirely to a fine well-struck 91 not out from Craig Miles. At 92 for no wicket after 13 overs, Clifton seemed set for a ten-wicket victory with overs to spare. However, when William Barrett (46) fell to an oddly limp leading-edge return catch, he and Tom Smith (61) having struck the ball very cleanly to that point, the home side rather lost its way. Needing 11 in the final over, they then needed to hit four off the last ball, but didn?t make contact. Two years ago, in the same fixture against the same opposition, Clifton needed to hit three off the last ball to win, and hit a six.
On the same ground the next day, there was not quite a breathless hush in The Close but it was heart-warming to see an excellent Welsh comprehensive Under-15 side defeat a strong Clifton team in the last 16 of the Lord?s Taverners competition. Aneurin Donald, who has already played several games for Glamorgan 2nd XI, led the way with 106 towards Pontarddulais?s total of 225 and it proved rather too many for the home side who, through Joel Barber?s admirable 68, reached a more than respectable 191 for eight in the 35 overs to which the game had been reduced.
The National Twenty20 is approaching the quarter-final stage. In the North, Woodhouse Grove will meet Sedbergh to determine a regional representative for Finals day; Shrewsbury will play Bedford, Repton or Oakham; in the South St Bede?s have won through to the quarter-finals and will meet St Albans, Whitgift or KCS Wimbledon; and, in the West, Filton Academy face Millfield to play, in turn, Bradfield or Portsmouth Grammar School.
