Review by Douglas Henderson
With a further example of Sod?s Law, more politely known as Murphy?s Law, after the previous Saturday?s glorious weather during half-term, the rain ? delightful for gardeners and indeed groundsmen ? returned with a vengeance this week. With the appalling exam system we now have, and schools mostly scheduled to play only once a week, yet again there was relatively little cricket played throughout the UK and the games actually played were often rain-affected.
However, there was a magnificent performance by Shaan Masood of Stamford who scored what I think is the first double-century of the season, 202 against Gresham?s in 50 overs. He has now scored 729 runs in the season, including four centuries, at an average of 121.50. The wicket at Gresham?s must have been pretty good, as the home side replied with a creditable 241 for seven.
Two 14-year-olds at The Glasgow Academy, bowling briskly, full and straight, took six for six and four for seven respectively as Haris Chaudhry ? who included a hat-trick – and Lyle Hill bowled out Heriot?s for 47.
Bedford were well-placed at 84 for three going into the last 20 overs chasing Oundle?s 165, but the latter?s spin trio of Harry Ramsden, Jack Oughtred and Will Street took the last seven wickets for only seven runs.
The Cricketer Cup, the prestigious competition for 32 Old Boys? teams, begins next Sunday. Since its inception, a huge number of famous cricketers have taken part. Details may be found from the link on this website. Despite what some security systems say (including mine), it is a very reputable site! So do visit it.
