Another weekend of, as one school put it, dodging the rain and playing in the near dark. Thus again the results are limited, but the National20 competition began to take shape, especially in the South region. See under Competitions for an updated picture of the competition.
I don?t normally cover 2nd XI matches but this is an exception. St George?s, Weybridge, who instituted a 50/40 league in their area last year, extended this to 2nd XIs and added other innovations such as PowerPlays. In the 2nd XI match between RGS Guildford and St John?s, Leatherhead, RGS compiled 349 for four in 30 overs with William Ball scoring 176. I suspect that?s his last game for the 2nd XI. St John?s did well to respond with 208.
Two of the strongest schools in the country are only a few miles apart and they played a cracking local derby. Millfield batted first and got off to a good start reaching 100 for two from 26 overs. Some tight King?s Taunton bowling restricted Millfield to 148 for seven after 42 overs. Henry Thomas then batted superbly to score 88 not out from 52 balls to take Millfield?s total to a very competitive 256 for seven in their 50 overs. King?s started well and reached 50 for no loss after 10 overs. Millfield restricted King?s to 100 for five taking the crucial wickets of Alex Barrow and Craig Meschede. Todd Barrett (55) and Miles Lenygon (68) then shared an excellent 100 partnership to take King?s within 19 off the last three overs. But some excellent Millfield bowling and poor decision-making from the batters left King?s requiring 13 from the last over. Four was needed from the last ball on which King?s ran a two, leaving the visitors one run short.
Wellingborough won the toss and batted against Repton. From 18 for three they limped to 89 for three by lunch and eventually were bowled out for a very modest 164. By tea, Repton were three for one. The rate required increased from four an over to seven for the last five overs. At the start of the final over, Repton were seven wickets down with seven to win. They lost a wicket first ball and then found themselves needing three off the last ball. A run-out ensued, so Repton were nine down and two short.
With their one-run victory, King Edward?s, Bath gained revenge for the same match two years ago when Bristol Grammar School won by one wicket chasing a very similar score. Joe Weare (five for 16) was the ninth bowler used by King Edward?s and came on to bowl in the 40th over.
One Twenty20 match produced a thrilling 43-ball century. Shiv Thakor, of Uppingham, was chasing Leicester Gramar School?s 135 for six. He was on 95 with two to win and hit a six to reach his hundred.
MCC?s game with Felsted went down to the last ball for the third year in a row (sounds like good MCC captaincy). Alex Marjoribanks, the captain, was on strike and needed two to win. Instead of scampering a couple, he instead drove the Minor Counties bowler over the pavilion for six.
