Another cricketing day and yet more rain. Wellingborough’s number three batsman Matthew Clarke followed up his 95 against Leicester Grammar School with a very well-made 75 whilst wickets fell around him. An eighth wicket partnership with younger brother Jonny (47 not out) allowed Wellingborough to post 218-8. In reply Stamford were well placed on 128-2 at tea when the rain came, with opener Joey Evison looking in control on 65 not out.
George Holden and Joey Chong batted patiently for The King’s School in Macclesfield and picked on anything loose on offer from the Cheadle Hulme bowlers. Whilst dominating the first half, the visitors were never quite able to get away from the hosts’ lacklustre performance in the field. In chasing a challenging 228-5 from 40 overs, Ed Fluck’s vigorous 155 broke the school’s batting record. He worked his way to 20, albeit surviving a couple of close shaves, and then launched into the bowling. Fluck was well supported in a 100+ opening stand with Ollie Latter and then Ben Staniforth before being stumped with victory a mere one blow away. Victory for Cheadle Hulme by seven wickets came with seven overs to spare.
Colston’s captain and opening batsman Ed Webb crafted a very mature innings, reaching 138 not out in 141 balls in a total of 214 for four in 40 overs. This included six sixes, and a four in the final over. Dauntsey’s were kept in touch by an elegant 93 from opener Rahul Patel who was out with two overs remaining, but against only 80 balls (seven fours and five sixes). But it was not enough as Dauntsey’s finished six short of the target with eight down.
