The word draw in cricket is almost invariably preceded by the word dull. Not so at Wellingborough where the momentum changed hands several times. Stamford dominated the first session, going into lunch at 152-1. Wellingborough then came out with all guns blazing and after removing prodigious talent Joey Evison for 83, Stamford were bowled out in just over an hour after the lunch interval for 215. Wellingborough lost two crucial wickets just before tea and once the top five had been dismissed for under 50 it was backs against the wall. The ninth wicket fell with the score at just 85 and with 17.4 overs remaining the game looked well and truly over. Number 10 Matthew Chalcraft following his 17 overs of quick seam bowling chipped away at the remaining overs with number 11 Tom Pope. The pair survived to draw the game; a great effort from the two tail-enders, showing great character and determination where others had wilted.
Tom Gnodde hit a fine 97-ball hundred for Eton after a perilous start against Hampton. What looked like turning into a gripping finale was rather ruined by 40 minutes of rain and so the game did indeed peter out into a draw, but with Hampton only 25 runs short of Eton?s declaration of 241 for five.
Wellington were away at Marlborough and having been stuck in traffic on the way, owing to an M4 closure, the game began at 12 noon and was reduced to 46 overs. Marlborough bowled tidily with the new ball whilst it swung, taking a wicket in the second over. However, once Jack Davies and Alex Shoff got through the difficult period they built a partnership of 281 which took Wellington close to their overall total of 306 for three. Marlborough started well with the bat, reaching 70 for the loss of their first wicket in the 16th over. Elijah Samuel making 69. However, things turned in Wellington?s favour when leg-spinner Jhatha Subramanyan was introduced to the attack, which ended with his taking six for 26 in his 10 overs. Subramanyan was well supported by Sam Sweetland and Ajeet Dale, and Marlborough were dismissed for 197.
Not only the civil service is now in purdah. The schools cricket season moves into one long series of exams and so schools are under pressure to reduce fixtures and indeed duration of fixtures (35 overs on Saturday afternoons, perhaps, rather than 50 overs all day).
