Very few results as it was half-term; mainly a few games against Old Boys? sides. These can often be not very satisfactory contests as the best old boys probably play for clubs and can?t be released on a Saturday. A magnificent exception was at Shrewsbury where the school side and the old boys side (Shrewsbury Saracens) were captained by the brothers Lewis who also happen to be the grandsons of Peter May. The Saracens knocked up 222 for five in their 40 overs and the school responded vigorously to finish three short on 219 with six down. A fuller report will appear next week.
The main activity last week was the play-off stage of the National Twenty20 competition. There were some tense encounters and one or two surprises, but we are now down to the last 16 in the competition with finals day (semi-finals and finals) at Arundel on Friday July 3rd, starting 10am. Always a great event and so far at Arundel we have been blessed wth glorious weather which has produced good crowds of local spectators. We are also privileged to have the event covered by the doyen of cricket photographers Patrick Eagar. For details click here.
Last year, CricHQ covered the finals day live with ball-by-ball coverage available on the internet on this website. This year they have extended their sponsorship (in the sense of not charging for providing a service which normally entails a management fee) by covering all the matches from regional finals onwards, though not actually providing a scorer until finals day. As long as schools can provide a scorer using CricHQ and there is an internet connection available (see last week on how to make a smartphone a local hotspot), then all matches involving the last 16 can be covered live on this website and also on a school?s own website. Details are being sent to the schools involved.
Postscript to my remarks last week about tips which Andrew Strauss has invited. Item number 5: NEVER play the halfway shot, ie neither a cut (horizontal bat) nor forcing shot off the back foot (vertical bat). I must have said a hundred times a season when I was coaching: just watch the replay on any televised dismissal when the batsman plays on to the wicket and you can guarantee that the bat will be at about 45 degrees. The way to play this slightly wide ball was demonstrated brilliantly by Kane Williamson last week. You play with soft hands and a vertical bat gently angled to the off and it runs down to third man (needless to say, England didn?t notice he was doing this all the time and didn?t have a third man). Safe as houses. Ian Bell did this a couple of years ago but seems to have stopped. Not long ago I counted seven dismissals of England batsmen playing the halfway shot.
